The best long-term investments are in growing companies that care about their shareholders, employees, environment and community. Since our firm's inception, we've made a thorough hands-on examination of a company's business practices an integral part of our fundamental investment process. That's helped us consistently identify companies that are not just doing right, but doing so profitably and sustainably.

To us, socially responsible investing is about investing in companies that are growing, solidly financed, doing good and underappreciated by the market. All of these characteristics must be met. It isn't merely a matter of weeding out the bad and the ugly or investing in the noble. Rather, performance-oriented, socially responsible investing is about paying the right price for organizations and managements who have translated the desire to do good into profitable action.

Our research leads us to a large, mid and even small-cap universe of companies dealing with global realities and away from a world filled with hopes, promises and well-intended dreams. It would be great to identify the next big thing to save the environment but the proper risk/reward relation must be present in order for us to invest. We care about generating superior returns for our clients. We believe this is best accomplished by investing in superior companies that are managed in a socially responsible way.

One question that investors ask about socially responsible investing (SRI) is whether such a strategy comes with inherent costs, both in terms of reduced total return and higher investment expenses. Our record proves otherwise. In fact, we'd argue that throughout American history from its earliest days, well run businesses focused on providing creative solutions to large markets that benefit customers, shareholders, employees and community have been more sustainable and rewarding investments over the long term.
